> A [Gateway](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Gateway) provides wireless coverage to LoRaWAN [Devices](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Device). Your devices must be in range of at least one gateway to be able to send and receive data. You can easily add pre-approved gateways to your network using one of our simple onboarding techniques. You can also add non-preapproved gateways however you will be required to manually enter all necessary gateway information.

## Add by Searching

> ℹ️ Use this technique to easily add a pre-approved gateway purchased from [Go Wireless NZ](https://www.gowifi.co.nz/index.php?virtuemart_category_id%5B0%5D=78&Itemid=207&option=com_customfilters&view=products&lang=en&custom_f_48%5B0%5D=393335). When using this technique, you only need to know the Gateway EUI or Serial Number.

Add a pre-approved gateway by searching for the gateway in our database:

1. Click **Searching.**
2. Choose a Network Server.
3. Search for a gateway.
a. Select searching by Gateway EUI or Serial Number.
  b. Enter the search term.
  c. Click **Search Claimable Gateways**.
4. Edit gateway details if desired.
5. (Optional) Enter the **Location** of the gateway.

> ℹ️ Some gateways automatically report their GPS location. If your gateway does not, you can manually set the GPS location here.

6. Click **Add Gateway**.

**Troubleshooting**

If your gateway cannot be found:

- Double check you have entered the Gateway EUI or Serial Number correctly.
- Ensure the gateway is a pre-approved gateway purchased from [Go Wireless NZ](https://www.gowifi.co.nz/index.php?virtuemart_category_id[0]=81&custom_f_48[0]=393335&Itemid=207&option=com_customfilters&view=products&lang=en)
- If your gateway cannot be found, please contact [Scopious Support](mailto:support@scopious.co.nz) to have it added to their database. In the meantime, you can still add the gateway using the Template technique.

If your gateway is already in use:

- If your gateway is already in use by your organisation, then you can view and edit the gateway by going to the **Network > Gateways** page and searching for the gateway by EUI or serial number.
- If your gateway is already in use by another organisation, then please contact [Scopious Support](mailto:support@scopious.co.nz) to rectify the problem.

## Add by scanning QR code

> ℹ️ Use this technique to easily add a pre-approved gateway purchased from [Go Wireless NZ](https://www.gowifi.co.nz/index.php?virtuemart_category_id[0]=81&custom_f_48[0]=393335&Itemid=207&option=com_customfilters&view=products&lang=en). When using this technique, you only need to scan the QR code. If your gateway does not have a QR code, use either the [Searching](#Add-by-Searching) or [Template](#Add-using-Template) technique.

Add a pre-approved gateway by scanning the gateway QR code:

1. Click **QR Code**.

2. Choose a Network Server.
3. Grant your browser permission to use the camera.
4. Position the gateway in front of the camera so the QR code is clearly in view. Adjust camera zoom level or turn on the torch if need be.
5. Once the gateway is recognised, edit the details if desired.
6. (Optional) Enter the **Location** of the gateway.

> ℹ️ Some gateways automatically report their GPS location. If your gateway does not, you can manually set the GPS location here.

7. Click **Add Gateway**.

**Troubleshooting**

Tips if you have trouble scanning the QR code (some codes can be very small):

- Try to fill the indicated square with as much of the QR code as possible will still keeping it in focus of the camera.
- Try turning on your phone torch as that can sometimes help the camera focus.
- If you have multiple cameras on your phone, select the best one that can focus at close range.
- If all else fails, try using the [Searching](#Add-by-Searching) technique to add the gateway.

## **Add using Template**

> ℹ️ Use this technique to add a pre-approved gateway that was not purchased from [Go Wireless NZ](https://www.gowifi.co.nz/index.php?virtuemart_category_id[0]=81&custom_f_48[0]=393335&Itemid=207&option=com_customfilters&view=products&lang=en). When using this technique, you will need to provide the gateway EUI and know the brand, model, and firmware version of the gateway.

## Configure a gateway

After clicking the **Add Gateway** button, you will be presented with a CUPs key. Copy it to your clipboard or download it by clicking the **Download Key **button. This key is required to be configured in the gateway when using **LoRa Basics Station** protocol.

> ⚠️ Make sure you download or copy the CUPs key as you won’t be able to see it again.

To configure your gateway, refer to the appropriate [gateway configuration guide](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/179372093) applicable for your gateway.

## Test gateway configuration

> ℹ️ Before installing your gateway at site, we recommend testing your gateway while in the vicinity of reliable power and internet connectivity to ensure the configuration is correct.

Once the gateway is configured correctly and turned on, it should connect to the Scopious network. To check the gateway connects successfully:

1. Navigate to the **Network > Gateways** page using the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.
2. Check the **Last Seen** field of your gateway:
  - If the gateway has connected successfully, you will see a green dot and a recent timestamp. If this occurs the gateway configuration is good.
  - If the gateway has not connected successfully, you will see a red dot with the word **Never**. If this occurs check the following:
    - Wait up to 2 minutes after turning on or restarting the gateway, as gateways can take some time to power up and establish a connection with the network server.
    - Refresh the **Gateways** page periodically to get an updated **Last Seen** value.
    - Check the [gateway configuration](#2.-Configure-the-gateway) to ensure the packet forwarder protocol is configured correctly.
    - Check the gateway has a reliable internet connection.
    - For further troubleshooting hints refer to the [troubleshoot gateways](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/160137230) guide.

## Installing a gateway

> ℹ️ Gateways require a reliable source of power and a reliable internet connection.

Due to the variety of gateway form factors, site locations, and environmental conditions, installing gateways is out of scope of this guide, and is the responsibility of the customer. Refer to the manufacturer's installation guides when installing a gateway.

## Testing gateway connectivity

Once the gateway is configured, installed and turned on, test it again to ensure it can connect to the Scopious network. To test gateway connectivity, follow the same steps described in the [test gateway configuration](#3.-Test-gateway-configuration) section.
