## Configure an Alarm

> ℹ️ You can configure an alarm when creating it or reconfigure it after creation. With complex alarms, you may find it easier to begin with a simple alarm and then build on it, testing it as you go to ensure your rules and condition logic are correct.

An [Alarm](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Alarm) is made up of one or more [Alarm Rules](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Alarm-Rule). Each alarm rule has four configurable settings tabs:

1. **Settings** - level to set alarm to when the rule conditions are met
2. **Conditions** - the rule logic
3. **Notifications** - users to notify when the rule conditions are met
4. **Actions **- commands and webhooks to trigger when the conditions are met

The following sections define these configuration settings in more detail.

### Settings

> ℹ️ The Settings tab allows you to set the alarm level for this rule, and information to include in notifications generated by this rule.

To configure general settings for a rule:

1. Select the **Rule**.
2. Select the **Settings** tab.
3. Configure the **Level** to set the alarm to when the rule is triggered.
4. Enter **Information** to notify users of when the rule is triggered.

### Conditions

> ℹ️ The Conditions tab allows you to define one or more conditions for this rule. Multiple conditions can be created and combined using boolean AND/OR logic.

To configure conditions for a rule:

1. Select the **Rule**.
2. Select the **Conditions** tab.
3. Click **Add Condition** and then:
  - Select the device to create the condition for.
  - Select the field to create the condition for.
  - Select the comparison type to make on the field.
  - Select the condition value.

Optionally, you can also add a Transition effect. This reduces alarm noise. Refer to [Concepts](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/175702018) for more details.

4. To create another condition, click **Add Condition** and then:
  - Fill in the contents of the condition.
  - Drag and drop the new condition on top of the previous condition (or elsewhere on the condition tree if multiple conditions already exist), taking care to select the correct AND/OR logic.

### Notifications

> ℹ️ The Notifications tab allows you to define who and how users get notified when the conditions for the rule are met.

To configure notifications for a rule:

1. Select the **Rule**.
2. Select the **Notifications** tab.
3. Click **New Notification** and then:
  - Select the method to notify the user:
    - Email - users are notified via email
    - InApp - users are notified via notifications in the Scopious application
  - Select the user(s) to notify:
    - [User](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#User) - notify an individual user
    - [Role](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Role) - notify all users assigned to that role
    - [Contact](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Contact) - notify an organisation contact (only applicable to emails)

> ⚠️ With InApp notifications, users must have the Scopious application open to be able to view the notification.

4. To notify more users, create another notification by clicking **Add Notification** again.

### Actions

> ℹ️ The actions tab allows you to define commands and webhooks that will be triggered when the rule conditions are met.

To configure a device command for a rule:

1. Select the **Actions** tab
2. Select **New Command**
3. Select the device you would like to send the command to
4. Select from the list of supported commands or click Custom Command in the bottom right.

  2. Optionally, fill out the advanced section

Commands to separate devices will be sent in parallel. If you are sending multiple commands to a single device, the order can be controlled by dragging a command entry above another.

  2. Enter any headers
    1. You can remove the default Authorization header if it is not required.
    2. You can mark any header for encryption so that it is stored encrypted and hidden from view

## Validate The Alarm

To ensure your Alarm is working as intended, it is recommended that you test it by providing mock data.

> ℹ️ No notifications will be sent as part of a test. Instead, a summary of what *would* have happened will be displayed.

To validate an Alarm:

1. Select the **Test** button in the top right.
2. For each device field, enter a value
3. Select **Validate**

The results show what rules would have been triggered, what actions they would have taken and what the overall status of the Alarm would now be.
