## Recommended Firmware Update Process

> ℹ️ IMPORTANT:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Changing the device firmware version in Scopious will **NOT** update the firmware in the device, as Firmware Update Over The Air (FUOTA) is not currently supported.
> ℹ️ - Ensure the firmware version is supported in Scopious BEFORE you manually update the firmware in the device.

If you wish to update the firmware in your device, we recommend following this 2 step approach:

1. Update the firmware version in Scopious first, then
2. Update the firmware in the physical device.

Following this process ensures the version is supported in Scopious before you update the firmware on the device. This may prevent you having to roll back firmware updates on the device in situations where Scopious does not support the latest version.

To minimise the risk of incorrectly decoding uplink packets, update the firmware version in both Scopious and the device as close together in time as possible.

> ℹ️ It is important the firmware version is supported in Scopious to ensure device uplink packets are decoded correctly. If you are unsure whether the firmware version is supported follow the first 2 steps in [Change Firmware Version](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/434536466/Updating+Firmware#Change-Firmware-Version) to view the list of supported versions.

4. Click **Save** to proceed. Checks are conducted to identify any potential issues in changing to the new version. If no issues are identified the change will be saved. If potential issues are identified they will be categorised as [Major](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/434536466/Updating+Firmware#Major-Change) or [Minor](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/434536466/Updating+Firmware#Minor-Change), and you will be prompted before continuing.

### Peripheral Device

To change the current firmware version associated with your peripheral device:

1. Navigate to the device page following the steps in [View Firmware Version - Peripheral Device](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/434536466/Updating+Firmware#Peripheral-Device).
2. Follow the same steps from step 2 onwards in [Change Firmware Version - Device](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/434536466/Updating+Firmware#Device.1).

### Devices with Custom Payload Formatters

> ℹ️ An extra step may be involved when changing the firmware version of a device using a custom [payload formatter](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Payload-Formatter).

In some situations, custom payload formatters may be used to process uplink packets from your devices. You can identify if your device is using a custom payload formatter by looking at the **Device Details > Formatter Info** section.

When selecting a new firmware version for a device using a custom payload formatter, changes may need to be made to the custom payload formatter. Scopious support will need to determine that, and once they have they will inform you of what custom payload formatter version to use.

## Data Format Changes

New firmware versions may result in changes to the data format of the device. This section contains information about the types of changes that may occur.

### Major change

Major changes involve altering the data format so it is incompatible with previous data formats.

> ⚠️ A major change will likely break Dashboards and Alarm's due to the significant data format changes.

> ⚠️ A major change will likely break external Integrations the device uses.

If you proceed with the change, ensure you reconfigure and test the associated features once the new firmware has been installed on the device.

![image-20250730-025351.png](media://3e6b93c0-f8ba-4cf8-a10a-89bedb16ebc9)

### Minor change

Minor changes involve extending the data format to include new fields. These new fields can be utilised in Dashboards and Alarms.

> ⚠️ New fields may cause issues with external Integrations that reject packets containing unknown (new) fields.

> ⚠️ If you are downgrading a firmware version, this may cause Dashboards and Alarm's to malfunction as they may rely on fields that have been removed.

If you proceed with the change, ensure you reconfigure and test the associated features once the new firmware has been installed on the device.

### Patch change

> ℹ️ You will only be notified of patch changes if your device uses a custom payload formatter.

Patch changes are usually bug fixes that help ensure your device is running smoothly. This should not break any features in the Scopious platform or external Integrations.

> ℹ️ You may be prompted to select a payload formatter version. If you are unsure which payload formatter version to choose, ask our support team by clicking **Request Help Version** and a support team member will get back to you.

## Troubleshooting

### No Compatible Peripheral Device Firmware

> ℹ️ The message below will only appear when choosing a device firmware version that has no peripheral device firmware version registered against it.

A device firmware version will display an asterisk '*' next to it when there is no compatible peripheral device firmware version registered against it. In this situation you will not be able to proceed to select that device firmware version. You will need to wait until a compatible peripheral device firmware version has been registered in the platform.

To request the peripheral device firmware version be supported, click the “**Request Peripheral Device Support**” button. This will open the request in your preferred mail application or webpage. All required information will be prefilled, so you just need to send the email.

Once a compatible peripheral device firmware version has been registered a support team member will contact you. You will then be able to update the firmware version.
