## Understanding Sites

Sites allows you to define a [Site](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site) on a map and record points of interest within the site (known as [Site Locations](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site-Location)). With each Site Location you can upload images of that location and place pins on the image to represent the precise location of [Devices](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Device).

## Why use Sites?

While we can make use of the **Network Map** to locate a device, due to the level of precision provided by GPS, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where that device resides at that location. If we have many devices in a single location, it can be challenging to reliably use the Network Map to find the exact location of a device. This is where Sites is useful. For example, if a site contains a multi-floor building with numerous devices on each floor, you can create a Site Location representing the building and upload a floor plan image for each level. This allows you to accurately place pins on each floor plan to indicate the exact locations of devices.

## Sites and Devices on the Network Map

On the **Network > Network Map** page, you will see your [Sites](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site) along with pins for your [Devices](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Device), [Gateways](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Gateway), and [Site Locations](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site-Location).

On the **Network > Network Map** page, you will see your [Sites](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site) along with pins representing [Site Locations](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Site-Location) and your [Devices](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Device) and [Gateways](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/85917701/Glossary+of+Terms#Gateway) (if they have GPS coordinates configured).

Site Locations will always be shown within a Site. Devices and Gateways may or may not be shown within a site, depending on their GPS coordinates:

- If a device or gateway has no GPS coordinates, they will not be displayed on the map.
- If a device or gateway has GPS coordinates defined, it will always appear on the map at those coordinates, regardless of whether it is assigned to a Site Location or whether the coordinates fall inside or outside a Site.

> ℹ️ The device count number represents the number of devices added to Site Location Images only. It does not represent the total number of devices within the site boundary.

> ℹ️ If a device has GPS coordinates but has also been assigned to a Site Location (by being placed on a site location image), and the device’s GPS coordinates differ significantly from the Site Location’s GPS coordinates, it may cause confusion as to where the device is actually located.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ For this reason, we recommend you always keep the device’s GPS coordinates up to date, especially when the device is moved.

## Devices with GPS Receivers

Some devices are equipped with GPS receivers and report their own location data. Such devices cannot be added to Site Location images. This is to prevent confusion when these devices move, as they will report a different location to that of the Site Location. Only devices with no location saved or devices with a static location set within the Scopious application may be added to Site Location images.
