> ℹ️ We highly recommend setting up and testing gateways in a stable environment with reliable power and internet connectivity before deploying them in the field. This helps identify and fix configuration or connectivity issues that are harder to address on-site.

## Steps

Follow these steps to setup Milesight UG56/65/67 Gateways to connect to the Scopious Network.

1. If you are using an external antenna, attach that to the gateway before continuing (to prevent RF damage to the componentry).
2. Connect the gateway to your local network (via ethernet cable or WIFI). The Wifi SSID will be `Gateway_******`. The *** correlates to the last 6 digits of the MAC address of your gateway. If your gateway is on a later firmware, then the Wifi password is `iotpassword`. We recommend changing this to your own password or disabling the WLAN entirely if you do not plan on using it.
3. Login to the gateway console using a web browser. Default settings are:
  - IP address: `192.168.23.150` (LAN) or `192.168.1.1`(Wifi)
  - Username: `admin`
  - Password: `password`
4. Follow through the initial setup wizard, including changing your password. SMTP and Contact information can be skipped.
5. Upgrade firmware to the latest version. You can obtain the latest firmware from the Milesight [Download Center](https://www.milesight.com/iot/resources/download-center/#firmware-sdk).
6. Once the gateway has rebooted log back into it.
7. Download the appropriate [configuration file](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/179568704/Configure+Milesight+Gateways#Configuration-Files) and load it into the gateway:
  1. Go to Maintenance -> Backup and Restore -> Restore Config
  2. Browse for the default configuration file and select ‘Import’
8. Load the CUPS Client Key File: *(use the *`cups.key`* file generated when the gateway was **[registered with the Scopious network server](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/75169790/Add+a+gateway#1.-Register-the-gateway)**. There is a placeholder *`cups.key`* already on the gateway. It will need to be updated with the new one that you generated) *
  1. Go to Packet Forwarder -> General -> Multi-Destination
  2. Click the edit button on the ‘**The Things Industries**’ entry
  3. In the ‘Client Key File (*.key)’ section, load the Client Key file by browsing to it and selecting ‘Import’
  4. Click ‘Save’, then ‘Save & Apply’

9. Configure gateway network interface to allow gateway to connect to the internet: *(note you will lose connectivity with the gateway when changing these settings, so ensure they are set correctly so you can re-establish communication with the gateway)*
  1. Go to Network -> Interface
  2. Set network parameters so gateway can connect to the internet. How you configure this will be dependent on your backhaul method (LAN or cellular). If you’re using cellular, ensure that the SIM is enabled with data on it. If the auto APN feature does not select the correct APN for your SIM, then you may need to enter the APN name into the cellular settings.
10. Test internet connectivity:
  1. Go to Maintenance -> Tools -> Ping
  2. Enter `8.8.8.8` into the Host box and click the ‘Ping’ button
  3. Ensure all 4 packets are responded to (0% packet loss)
11. Test network server connectivity:
  1. Follow the instructions to [test gateway configuration](https://scopious.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/75169790/Add+a+gateway#3.-Test-gateway-configuration)
12. Backup the configuration for future use:
  1. Go to Maintenance -> Backup and Restore -> click ‘Full Backup’ button

> ℹ️ Your gateway should now be configured correctly and is ready for deployment.
